Olympus are about to discontinue support for the ground breaking DSS Player Pro release 5 that has served many a dictator and professional transcriptionist well over the last few years. And, as a word of warning for those still clinging to this release, now is the time to finally bite the bullet and upgrade to ODMS (Olympus Dictation Management System, the new name for DSS Player Pro).
What happens when the clock passes the July 2014 date for DSS Player Pro R5 Users?
Your software will continue to function as it is now but there will be no support available from Olympus themselves or from the greater Olympus Pro Audio reseller community, the push will be to upgrade in order to get the best out of your Olympus software. This also means that Olympus will cease to develop this software, there will be no more updates or patches. DSS Player Pro R5 will end it’s days at final release version R5.0.14.
Isn’t Upgrading To ODMS from DSS Player Pro expensive?
No, not really. Olympus for the first time actually have an upgrade path. In previous releases you had no choice but to purchase a new full licence, however going from R5 to R6 there are upgrades for both the dictation module and transcription module, they cost AU$59 each per licence (install). The part numbers are:
Olympus AS-7003 – Upgrade from DSS Player Pro R5 Dictation Module to ODMS R6 Dictation Module – AU$59 incl. GST with free shipping
Olympus AS-7004 – Upgrade from DSS Player Pro R5 Transcription Module to ODME R6 Transcription Module – AU$59 incl. GST with free shipping.
You will need your original R5 licence key. The key starts with the letters RT5 for the transcription module and RD5 for the dictation module. If you can not find your original licence key you can find it from the software itself. Click here to see one of our older posts which shows here to find your licence key.
I’m Already Running DSS Player Pro R5 on Windows 7, Do I Need To Upgrade?
DSS Player Pro R5 us Windows 7 compatible from some of its later releases, indeed from v5.0.12 it also supported the new RS-32 four pedal USB foot control in the transcription module. DSS Player Pro R5 is not Windows 8 or 8.1 compatible, at some stage you are likely to move to this or later version of the Windows operating system. To get the best out of your software, to enjoy the stability and also the additional features in ODMS R6 why put off the inevitable.
I Have An Old Recorder Will This Be Supported In ODMS R6?
Most Olympus recorders are compatible with ODMS R6, if you are not sure always contact your local Olympus pro reseller to double check. A point of note, those of you who are still using the old workhorse models DS-4000 (superseded by the DS-5000 and then the DS-7000) and DS-3300, these are supported in ODMS R6 unto the current version (at time of writing this post June 2014) which is R6.2.2 – beyond this version these models will no longer be supported.
